The Video Development Initiative (ViDe) is offering a one-day workshop on the new H.350 “Directory Services Architecture for Multimedia Conferencing” standard ratified in August 2003 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

What is H.350?

H.350 was developed by the Internet2 Middleware Initiative Video Working Group and the Video Development Initiative (ViDe) to solve problems they encountered when building and scaling Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP-Videoconferencing networks.

H.350 uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to provide a uniform way to store and locate end-user and endpoint information in directories that are seamlessly linked to, and built upon, identity management systems already in place within an enterprise or service provider network.

H.350 enables automated, accurate and manageable service creation and provisioning.  Small investments in H.350 by developers of gatekeepers, IP-PBXs, softswitches and/or SIP servers, enable large savings in deployment, expansion, helpdesk support and troubleshooting on the part of integrators, deployers and administrators.  At some point enterprises and service provides will require H.350 support from their vendors, and vendors not supporting the standard will be at a competitive disadvantage.

More information about H.350 can be found at http://lab.ac.uab.edu/vnet/.

Significant support for this work was provided by a National Science Foundation grant, ANI-0222710, to the University of Alabama at Birmingham with partners Claremont Graduate University, SURFnet and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. H.350 was introduced in Release 2 of the NSF Middleware Initiative as commObject, an NMI-EDIT component, in part supported by the NSF Middleware Initiative ANI-0123937. The National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative-Enterprise and Desktop Integration Technologies (NMI-EDIT) Consortium comprises Internet2, EDUCAUSE, and SURA.
