Managing Digital Video Content Workshop
(Sponsored by: Southeastern
Universities Research Association, ViDe,
Internet2,
and Coalition
for Networked Information)
The recent Managing Digital Video Content conference was a two-day workshop
on current and emerging standards in the digital content management field. It
marked the first time that the four sponsors – the Southeastern
Universities Research Association, ViDe,
Internet2,
and the Coalition
for Networked Information – had worked together on the issue. This resulted
in a unique perspective for the conference and its approach; rather than looking
at the topic from any one angle, the workshops featured a variety of viewpoints.
The first day of the conference encompassed standards-based content
management. Presentations covered topics from the basics of metadata
and the related Dublin Core Initiative to maintaining security and
integrity of digital content. There were also hands on workshops
covering Dublin Core and rights metadata.
The second day was forward looking, focusing on emerging technologies
and implementations. MPEG-7 was the big topic among speakers, including
four people who handle digital audio and video content management
on a daily basis. This provided a real-world link for the conference,
rather than a purely theoretical focus.
Jane Hunter of the Distributed Systems Technology Centre in Australia
gave the keynote address. She presented a thorough description of
MPEG-7 standards, descriptors, and tools, as well as looking at
related initiatives like MPEG-21.
The conference took place in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 15th
and 16th, 2001. It was well attended, with representatives
from universities across the United States, corporations like CNN
and AT&T, and institutions like the Smithsonian Archives and
the Library of Congress.
