The ViDeNet project was started by ViDe to explore issues associated with global scalability for video conferencing over IP. Toward that end, the project was quite successful and was instrumental in the development of GDS, H.350 and the development of a community of experts and users. Funding for the current iteration of the research project ran out many years ago and many of its research efforts are now implementable at individual campuses, rather than having to be hosted by a research testbed. For example, H.323 URL dialing is now available and working, as are H.350 directory services. On June 1, 2006 the https://videnet.unc.edu/ site will be frozen to allow time for system administrators to make copies of relevant data files and archive them to ViDe. Zone administrators should take advantage of this period of time to make copies of any information important to them. On July 1, the site will be taken off the network. The specific functions that will no longer be available include:

  • User management tools
  • Zone management tools
  • Help pages
  • Directory services
  • GDS request resources.
Several GDS related changes will occur at that time also. The GDS North American Root and Global Root hosted at The University of North Carolina will no longer be available. Ohio State University and the Internet2 Commons will be taking over these functions. The current documentation specifies Ohio State as the North American Primary GDS root, so if your gatekeeper is configured that way you should notice no change.
