The ViDe MPEG-4 Working Group has become the latest member of the MPEG-4 Industry Forum. The MPEG-4 Industry Forum is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to further the adoption of the MPEG-4 standard by establishing MPEG-4 as an accepted and widely used standard among application developers, service providers, content creators and end users. The ViDe MPEG-4 working group is proud to welcome the New World Symphony as it's newest affiliate group. They will be represented by Tom Snook, Director of Technology and Information Systems. You can find additional information about the New World Symphony at http://www.nws.org.

The WG is currently preparing two deliverables for the Southeastern
Universities Research Association: 1.) an overview of MPEG-4 and
2.) a directory of industry players and technologies. SURA provided
funding in May 2001 to support the activities of ViDe, including
the efforts of this WG.
October 2001
October 30, Rob Konen of MPEG, was interviewed
on StreamingMedia.com. The agenda included: "MPEG-4: how it
all started, relation to MPEG -2/-7/-21, potential markets, 'must-know'
profiles, FUD surrounding MPEG-4, MPEG-4 Industry Forum, licensing,
interoperability, possible migration paths to cable/satellite television,
Digital Rights Management, fine granularity scalability profile,
and conformance and conformance testing.
Welcome to new WG members Robert McDonald of Auburn University
and David Walsh of The Australian National University. The ViDe
MPEG-4 WG is currently expanding its membership. If you're interested

Doug Pearson (Indiana University) gave a presentation
on the ViDe MPEG-4 WG as part of the Internet2 Digital Video sessions
at Telecon West, October 24.
June 2001
Grace Agnew and Ed Price (both of Georgia Tech) presented on MPEG-4
applications for higher education at the EDUCAUSE Southeast Regional
Conference, June 28 - 29, in Orlando, FL.
Mairead Martin, William Rhodes, and David Kuhlman of The University
of Tennessee attended the M4IF 2nd Workshop and Exhibition of MPEG-4
in San Jose from June 18 - 20. Tutorial and panel presentations

As part of an award to ViDe from the Southeastern Universities
Research Association (SURA), the ViDe MPEG-4 WG has received funding
to support WG activities. With SURA support, the WG has secured
a Graduate Research Assistant, Michael West, who is responsible
for WG web page content, and research on MPEG-4 technologies and
developments. SURA funding will also be applied to meetings with
industry to discuss cooperative MPEG-4 application development.

Mairead Martin presented on the ViDe MPEG-4 WG at the Internet2
members meeting in Washington, DC.
January 2001
On January 8, an RFI on MPEG-4 Technology Development and Solicitation
of Interest in Cooperative MPEG-4 Application Development was released
to MPEG-4 developers. The RFI outlines the development and application
interests of the WG.
