Subject: Important. ViDeNet Migration
This affects all ViDeNet and Internet2 Commons
zone administrators
We are pleased to announce the availability of the
ViDeNet version 3 architecture. Please join us on
July 24, 2002 for a Brown Bag Munch videoconference
to discuss details about the migration and answer
any questions you might have. Bob Dixon from Ohio
State will be hosting a contest to give away a Palm
Pilot to a lucky participant. If you don't come, you
can't win! See details at http://www.unc.edu/video/videnet/munch/
This architecture will offer several important new
functionalities, including:
* Automated directory services and zone management
tools
* A new, more robust dial plan called GDS (Global
Dialing Scheme)
* A customizable portal that simplifies user access
to ViDeNet
ViDeNet zone administrators may start using the new
tools immediately after the meeting. Because of the
new dial plan, each existing ViDeNet zone
will need to obtain a new zone prefix. The existing
version 2 ViDeNet Master Gatekeeper will be kept in
service until September 25, 2002, but will be discontinued
thereafter.
The new GDS gatekeeper hierarchy features redundant
global gatekeepers in the US, Ireland, Wales and Australia
for fully resilient operation. We are indebted to
RADVISION for generously providing this distributed
cluster of ECS (Enhanced Communication Server) gatekeepers.
CISCO MCM (Multimedia Conference Manager) is also
represented in the hierarchy ensuring a vendor-neutral,
standards based environment.
Please review the detailed schedule and FAQ is available
at http://www.unc.edu/video/videnet/version_3/release_schedule.html
Scope of Work: ViDeNet is a testbed for the
exploration of issues associated with globally scalable
video and voice over IP deployments. ViDeNet provides
an interconnection scheme for h.323 gatekeepers, a
set of tools that assist in the management of zones,
a set of directory services, and an environment in
which network administrators can share knowledge,
experiences and resources. ViDeNet is initially focused
on the h.323 protocol suite, but is expanding to include
efforts in SIP, ENUM, LDAP, and security protocols.
ViDeNet derives its authority from the consent of
the participants, who agree to work cooperatively
to interconnect their networks in a way that is both
beneficial to them directly, and at the same time
enables global interconnectedness

Membership Guidelines: All ViDeNet zone administrators
are automatically members of this project team. All
members of this project must be zone administrators
in active zones; zone administrators are automatically
considered ViDe members but may opt out of the mailing
lists.
