ViDeNet Dialing Plan
The ViDeNet dialing plan conforms to
ViDe's RFC 'A Global Alphanumeric Naming Scheme for H.323' with
the following implementation specifics.
Gatekeeper Resolution
The current generation of gatekeepers
use static tables and multicast for out of zone address resolution.
The ViDeNet dial plan uses the naming scheme as described in the
RFC so that no naming changes will be required when gatekeeper resolution
is viable as described in the RFC.
Numeric Zone Identifiers
The current generation of H.323 products
has field length limitations that do not permit the full 12 digit
numeric zone identifier as described in the RFC. Therefore, all
numeric zone identifiers on ViDeNet are assigned by ViDe.
Alphanumeric Names (Aliases)
Multimedia Conferencing Aliases (MCAs)
are assigned by zone administrators. The gatekeeper.domain portion
of the MCA is always the DNS name of the gatekeeper. The user portion
of the MCA conforms to zone standards, but generally is the user
ID of the zones' other unified services, typically an email or kerberos
ID. This makes it easy for the gatekeeper administrator to determine
the identity of the user, and also provides a simple name for the
user to remember.
Multiple Terminal End Stations Registered
to a Single User
When a user has multiple terminal end
stations (TES), the primary TES is generally assigned an MCA as
described above. Additional TES MCAs are created by appending a
.x to the user portion of the MCA, where x represents an integer.
For example, if John Doe's primary TES is called John_Doe@netcall1.xyz.edu,
his second and third TESs would be named John_Doe.2@ netcall1.xyz.edu
and John_Doe.3@ netcall1.xyz.edu respectively.
Public and Special Case Names
H.323 TESs located in classrooms and
conference rooms are generally named by the building and room number
in which they are located (e.g. Patterson_102@netcall1.xyz.edu)
to facilitate easy directory lookup. Help@gatekeeper.domain is generally
reserved for zone administrators. In general, the goal with special
case names is to make them easy to look up in a directory and remember
by users.
