Video Access Working Group

Phase II:

Phase II will be developed as a group consensus, but may include:

º Develop Unicode-compliant databases for Oracle, Access and MySQL. Encourage the use of Dublin Core repeatable fields to add, at a minimum, creator, title and keywords in any language to create multilingual metadata records. Possibly do "proof-of-concept" testing with the APAN (Asian Pacific Advanced Network) Digital Library Working Group. Markus Buchhorn is currently co-chair of that group.

º Explore improved search and retrieval capabilities, exploring new technologies such as XQL, the NSCA EMERGE query & retrieval architecture, etc. and particularly develop a search & retrieval capability for the portal which supports multiple alphabet and language searching for multilingual metadata records.

º Test the use of rights metadata to direct user access from the metadata record to the resource--e.g. user is sent directly to the asset or to an authorization page depending on the value in a rights field. This would be tremendously useful in the distance learning arena, especially.

º Test interoperability with non-textual indexing and MPEG7.

º Do "proof-of-concept" testing for accessibility-challenged user communities. Chris Hodge is doing significant work with the Center for Deafness. Georgia Tech also has a very active Center for Assistive Technologies on campus who would certainly be interested in proof-of-concept testing in this arena.
